Going Out For Gourd Bird Houses

It seems that you can buy just about anything on the market these days. This is even truer for that vast, growing virtual market, the internet. Yet sometimes certain items are best made by hand and many people are of this mindset. One such example is the many different types of gourd bird houses that can be easily manufactured at home.

Gourd bird houses are usually made and not bought simply because they are such a simple design that it takes little instruction in designing one (as, really, most of the design is by nature anyway). In fact, many children intuitively make these little aviary domiciles on a regular basis.

The first step is to get a gourd. These usually are quite plentiful at harvest time, around mid to late October and early November, at latest. For those not in the know, gourds come in numerous sizes and shapes, most of which look like small pumpkins or squash. The reality is that they are closely related to both of these food items, yet are not edible.
It is for this reason that people have been using gourds for decoration and other unique uses, such as gourd bird houses.

Once the gourd has been selected (the larger the better, unless the goal is to house a hummingbird, as they're so small they'll fit in just about any sized gourd available). While the gourd is still moist it is important to cut a hole out of the side. When this has been accomplished, take care not to damage the walls of the gourd as its innards are removed. This is a bit tricky but not impossible. A tool or two may have to be fashioned to get at the deepest levels of inner gunk. Large tweezers, scissors, and even some medical tools will be of use for this purpose as well.

If a perch is desired, cut a smaller hole beneath the larger hole and insert a pole. Or for those less adroit with their hands, a simple Roman cross (a "plus sign") can be cut beneath the large hole and the pole for the perch pushed through to the back wall.

Once dry, this simple design makes for excellent gourd bird houses that will satisfy all but the most discriminating bird.
